#719 new Defect

Underline codes in nicknames not supported (was: Chanserv NPC and NPCA on irc.magicstar.net)

Reported by: lxndrc@… Owned by: timothy
Component: Colloquy (Mac) Version: 2.1 (Mac)
Severity: Normal Keywords:

Description

magicstar is a roleplaying game server, and as such the chanserv there uses commands 'npc' and 'npca' to display npc names and text without needing to change one's username. it formats them differently (underlined). other irc clients have no trouble seeing these messages from chanserv, but they do not display at all in colloquy, and I cannot see any option to make this work. please help?

Clarify? I've never heard of this.

Magicstar's Chanserv sends 'spoof' usernames using a special command 'NPC'. This allows people running pen-and-paper games through Magicstar to send messages using character names, rather than their own name. Until recently, Magicstar set aside these spoof usernames with asterisks on either side, so one would be unable to spoof an actual user. About a week ago, Magicstar moved to underlining the spoof-names instead. When this happened, the spoof names and any messages associated with them stopped appearing in Colloquy screens, although 'new message' indicators would appear, and if you had a flagged word, the appropriate alert would go off. The message itself would not display.

After talking to the Magicstar administrators, I did manage to get them to change back to their earlier formatting for the moment, so there's no way to test this currently that I know of, but when we tested it, it was very specifically the underline-in-username that threw Colloquy. A spoofed username without an underline (like the asterisked version) worked fine, and underlines in text, outside of usernames, also worked fine. But put the two together, and Colloquy just wouldn't display it, although it displayed fine on both mIRC and irssi (the irc programs I had available on my linux and windows computers, respectively).

If you need any more information, feel free to ask!

  • priority changed from normal to lowest
  • Summary changed from Chanserv NPC and NPCA on irc.magicstar.net to Underline codes in nicknames not supported (was: Chanserv NPC and NPCA on irc.magicstar.net)

i talked to them and they said its currently not an issue, since they switched back to the old system as described by lxndrc.

the old (and current) system looks like this:

:*Spots*!Sunfire@RPG.irc PRIVMSG #Magicstar :ACTION waves

the not working underline system had the underline codes where the * are:

:\037Spots\037!Sunfire@RPG.irc PRIVMSG #Magicstar :ACTION waves

btw, supporting this could cause problems with styles that underline nicknames by default… but maybe the codes could displayed with the codes still there? would look ugly, but would at least show the message

This is also a problem on Darkmyst.org, and they will not go back to using the previous format. Is there any way to get this bug repaired?
