#645 closed Defect (Won't Fix)

Default user name should not be set to real/local name

Reported by: anonymous Owned by: timothy
Component: Colloquy (Mac) Version: 2.0 (Mac)
Severity: Normal Keywords:
Cc:

Description

I'm not aware of anyone who uses their real name for IRC... when I loaded up Colloquy for the first time after migrating to a new computer it started logging in to my normal server, and I'm not sure what username it was using. By default, the chat login had my local account name which is my real name. It's possible that my privacy/anonymity was breached but it's impossible for me to tell from the logs I have. In any event, it scares me to have my real name put into any dialog by default in an IRC program, and I feel that this information should not be populated by local login information.

A lot of irc clients do this. You can always change what it is when you connect to a server. We remember it if you save the conenction.

The combination of automatically putting in the real name and of hiding that input box "below the fold" (having to click the "details" arrow) is in my opinion a big privacy issue.

Many people want some level of anonymity on IRC. IRC clients should either not divulge personal information such as the real name by default, or make it very clear that they are doing this, so that you can change/remove it.

Thus, either the "details" should be expanded the first time you create a connection (and it could remember your expanded/contracted setting) so that users notice that it includes their real name, or the real name should not be automatically entered.

Anything else violates user expectations of privacy.

We already discussed this. This shall remain closed.

i cannot believe "real name" set to computer name is the default setting. very privacy insensitive, should be part of the setup.

Agreed. The real name should not be used.

Wow. I too was also late to realizing the default setting for the real name field was the local name. Is there really no way of discovering whether this information was publicly available via /whois command through logged chats? I agree with the petitions before me to have this feature made plain and transparent.

This is as dumb now as it was 8 years ago.

comment:8 Changed 6 years ago by anonymous

Agreed. Setting the default such that it leaks potentially sensitive information goes against the grain.

I'm quitting colloquy because of this.

+1 really awful sending personal information by default

comment:12 Changed 5 years ago by anonymous

I agree, it's really annoying. Every time I make a new connection I have to remove my real name from Nickname, Username and Real Name fields. I wish there were some way to set the default info to your online handle.
Also, the first time I used colloquy I didn't go check the details and I joined an IRC chat with my full name displayed. It was very unpleasant.

I tried whois-ing myself by using another IRC client and joining the same channel with a different nick. My real name still appeared though I changed all those fields! I guess this is not fixed until now? Very unpleasant indeed.

I just discovered this accidentally. At least I was at a friend's house who's ip I wont likely need to use again soon, but now I don't feel like I can get on irc to kill the time while I'm hanging out alone over here, as I'd have the same IP I just had. I agree that it is crappy though, even if other clients do it, why not be better than them? I've just recently moved to Mac, but I never had this issue in 2 decades of using mIRC.

This is very stupid default.

Not a very good choice indeed. Please change this!

I'll be looking for a different IRC client. Pretty astonishing decision to leave this as is. Why would anyone ever want this default behavior? I'm pretty displeased that I connected to a server with my real name populated and didn't realize until much later.
