#321 closed Defect (Works for Me)

Copying and pasting actions shouldn't reformat them

Reported by: nougatmachine Owned by: timothy
Component: Colloquy (Mac) Version: 2.0 (Mac)
Severity: Normal Keywords: copy, paste, /me, actions

Description

There's an odd, although not major, bug in the way colloquy handles copying things to the clipboard. Let's say someone says the following:

[10:37pm] jvarner: As it turns out, Marc Cohn's vocal range fits mine nicely.
[10:37pm] jvarner: which means I can sing it rather comfortably.
[10:39pm] * jvarner is building a karaoke repository.

(I do realize that Colloquy uses a dot and not an asterisk, but bear with me.) If I copy that to the clipboard and paste it in another app, I'll see this:

[10:37pm] jvarner: As it turns out, Marc Cohn's vocal range fits mine nicely.
[10:37pm] jvarner: which means I can sing it rather comfortably.
[10:39pm] jvarner: is building a karaoke repository.

This makes it look as though jvarner just spoke in a sentence fragment, but actually, he's just been reformatted slightly by Colloquy when I copied his statement. It would be far preferable to have Colloquy copy it to the clipboard while preserving the way it really appeared. Perhaps the program is reformatting precisely because it can't copy the dot to the clipboard? In that case, I don't think anyone would mind if it substituted an asterisk. It may not seem like a big deal, but for users who copy things out of irc often, manually changing the format gets old rather quickly.

That's an artifact of the style. Try copying stuff from Decaf Bland - you'll see it really changes to be formatted far better for pasting than it originally was. But yeah, copying is supposed to preserve the fact that a message was an action - again, that's the individual style's fault.

So if you want, please list the styles that aren't copying actions properly. Otherwise nothing's going to change.

Well, this is the standard style, which is not only included with Colloquy, but also the default choice. ;) I think that's grounds for investigating the app itself.
