#271 closed Enhancement (Won't Fix)

Colloquy needs much better support for IRC "ghosts"

Reported by: colloquy@… Owned by: timothy
Component: Chat Core (IRC) Version: 2.1 (Mac)
Severity: Normal Keywords: nick ghost
Cc:

Description

Ideallly, Colloquy should be smart enough to talk to NickServ? and recover my nick automatically for me, if I tell it to. I get into this situation all the time when changing from wired to wireless on my laptop and suddenly I'm logged in as MacDome_ instead of MacDome?.

Or at least I want Colloquy to notice when MacDome? (my inadvertent ghost due to network disruption) logs off, and change my nick from MacDome_ back to MacDome?

I think this is a job for a script. NickServ? isn't a standard IRC feature, it's just an aspect of a few networks. And there's other reasons, too. But it wouldn't be hard to do this with a script.

eridius, Colloquy already has automatic support for authenticating to NickServ? though.

This should be a plugin. We won't be adding it.

Not including such a basic feature is somewhat ridiculous.

Replying to etherflan:

Not including such a basic feature is somewhat ridiculous.

how basic is this when it's not defined by any irc rfc? colloquy has nickserv identify support that only works because most services are similar enough, but it *does* break when different. ghosting and the intricacies of doing so between the different ircds and services packages available is even more insane than a comparatively trivial identify.

again, this should be a plugin. if you can back up your statement with some sort of reason why this should be in the client as opposed to a plugin, feel free to reopen. otherwise, please don't.
