#1457 closed Defect (Works for Me)

Channel name of # (AKA a blank channel name) breaks the UI

Reported by: colloquy@… Owned by: timothy
Component: Colloquy (Mac) Version: 2.2 (Mac)
Severity: Normal Keywords:

On irc it is possible to have a blank channel name (i.e. a channel named #). There are probably only a handful of people who actually know, exploit, and regularly use this fact to create the ultimate channel: a channel without mandate or purpose. I can understand if this is not fixable (or not worth the time) because it breaks how colloquy handles the channel.

If I join '#' any messages coming from people get shoved into Tabs/sidebar because colloquy seems to assume that if the channel attribute of a message is blank, then the message is a private message (going out on a limb and taking a big guess). So, as people chat there is a proliferation of tabs (one per speaker on the channel). If I respond on the channel tab, then it goes to channel, but if i respond on a tab then it is treated as a direct message.

If it can be fixed, I would start using colloquy again (have switched to X-Chat Aqua), if not, it is understandable. I only use IRC to join the # channel because that is where all of my retrograde internet friends idle.

Have a nice day.

This was reported in #1402 and fixed in [4185], the next release will contain this fix. Meanwhile you could build Colloquy from SVN.
