#1086 closed Defect (Fixed)

long lines are truncated

Reported by: jane Owned by: NoOneButMe
Component: Chat Core (IRC) Version: 2.1 (Mac)
Severity: Major Keywords: line truncation
Cc: julian@…, grahamperrin

for sanmarcos, who was too impatient to do this..

long lines (>512chars re:rfc1459) are truncated, and instead should be split up into multiple lines (as necessary) so the whole message is sent without being truncated.

it would appear that colloquy sends the whole line regardless of length to the server, which then truncates it.

I'd like to stress that this would be very nice to have. Coming from X-Chat, which breaks long lines automatically, with Colloquy I frequently find myself confused over what portion of my long messages others are seeing and which not.

+1 to this.

Seeing lines break automatically should be a good way of reminding oneself that lines might be shorter.

Learning the hard way that content is lost (receiving complaints from viewers/listeners) is not ideal ;)

the IRC RFC defines a 512 character limit, but there is overhead to be considered:
i.e. to send "message" to a channel,

nick!user@host PRIVMSG #channel :message\r\n

including any spaces in the message.

Consideration for different encodings is probably necessary too.
